Description
The Parish Church of St Mary is a historic church located on Church Street in Stevington. The church features a Saxon west tower that is below belfry level, with the top of the tower constructed in the Perpendicular style. The nave and both aisles date back to the 14th century, with the south aisle likely being older than the north aisle. The north and south chancel chapels also originate from the 14th century but are currently unroofed and in a ruinous state. A clerestory was added in the 15th century, which includes a fine nave roof adorned with figures holding shields that display emblems of the Passion, as well as woolpacks featuring the initials of two merchants. A high Perpendicular screen with one-light divisions is located under the tower. The front benches are notable for their 16th-century poppyheads. There is a brass memorial for Thomas Salle, who died in 1422, measuring 32 inches long, with his head resting on a large helmet. The church underwent Victorian restoration work in 1871, led by Henry Clutton.
