Description

The former Pavenham Lower School, dated 1853, is located on the south side of Pavenham High Street. It is constructed of roughly squared coursed limestone and features a clay tile roof with stone gable coping and moulded kneelers. The building is designed in an L-plan and is single storey throughout.

The north elevation includes two stone mullioned and transomed cast iron casements, each with three lights that have foliate heads. There are drip moulds with a naturalistic leaf motif on the stops and reversed stone arches below the windows. A central projecting wing has a crow-stepped gable and corner buttresses, topped by an ashlar bell turret supported by small fluted neo-classical pilasters. The bell opening is adorned with foliate designs.

Under the arch between the pilasters is a carved tablet that reads, "I LOVE THEM THAT LOVE ME. AND THOSE THAT SEEK ME SHALL FIND ME." Below this, there is a round multi-foliate opening that encloses a clock face, which features a drip mould with stops carved with human heads. A plaque below states, "This clock was placed here in affectionate remembrance of Joseph Tucker A.D. 1877."

Three small single-light windows with foliate-headed ashlar surrounds are located below the clock, with the central window blocked. The gable ends and rear of the building have larger, more typical four-light windows with glazing bars, also featuring drip moulds with foliated stops. The west gable end has a small gabled bell canopy with carved bargeboards and a drop finial.
