Description
Kempston House is a late 16th century or early 17th century timber-framed house with a rear wing added in the 18th century. The building was significantly extended and remodeled in the mid-19th century. The original wing features close-studded timber framing with red brick nogging and has a hipped old clay tile roof. It is two storeys tall with attics, a large ridge chimney stack, and three box dormers. The first floor has three sash windows, while the ground floor includes two rectangular hipped roof bays with French doors, flanked by single light casements with glazing bars. The southwest elevation's ground floor has been underpinned in brick, and this side, along with the northwest return, was originally jettied. The northwest elevation has a double-pitched colourwashed brick extension and a 19th-century one-storey lean-to. The building was extensively remodeled, and a northeast wing was added in the 19th century, featuring a red brick rectangular structure with a hipped slated roof. The northeast elevation is stuccoed and has two storeys, with three first floor sashes with glazing bars and three ground floor French doors, although the right-hand opening is now blocked.
