Description
The Town Hall, built in 1876-1877 by J T Meredith, serves as the District Council premises and was formerly used as council offices, a chamber, and a magistrates court. This two-storey building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It features a brick parapet with inset iron grilles and a stone cornice supported by brackets. The façade is divided into three bays by brick pilasters topped with stone caps. The windows have flat carved cornices on brackets, with carved aprons and cills also on brackets. The ground floor showcases channelled rustication, which includes three round-headed windows and a round-headed entry situated below a window that has a stone balcony. A clock is mounted on a wrought bracket, and a barometer is embedded in the wall. The building is topped with a mansard roof that has round-headed attic windows.
