Description
The Public Rooms, including the Corn Exchange, were built in 1853 by Bidlake and Lovall. Originally serving as a corn exchange, music hall, and public rooms, this two-storey building is constructed of brick with stone dressings. It features paired giant pilasters at each end and triple pilasters flanking the center. The ground floor is designed with channelled rustication. On the first floor, there are three windows adorned with cornices on consoles; the central window has a segmental pediment and stone balconies. The center pediment displays the town arms, and there is a parapet with inset iron grilles. A dentil cornice supported by brackets runs along the top. The entrance includes a round-headed doorway with double doors. To the left, there is a bell tower, and a one-storey section is located at the corner.
