Description
Red Cross House is a late 18th-century town house built in the classical style. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a slate roof featuring stone copings and stone window dressings. The building is double pile, with a projecting gable-end wing at the rear and a later addition to the back. It has two storeys and a cellar, and presents an asymmetrical three-bay façade. The windows are 8/8 sashes, with block stone sills; the ground-floor windows have stepped, grooved voussoirs to their flat arches. The central six-panel door has a distinguished door case featuring slender engaged Doric columns, open bracketed dentil detailing, and a semi-circular fanlight. Above this is a painted moulded stone cornice with a stuccoed parapet. There are two axial brick stacks. The right-hand side of the building has two bays and a 21st-century extension.
The decorative scheme continues on the left reveal, which incorporates a late 19th-century six-panel door set within a classical door case of pilasters and an entablature with panelled insets. The left-hand reveal is plain. The rear elevation has three bays, with a projecting gable-end wing to the north, all with matching window dressings. To the south is a 19th-century back addition, characterised by irregular fenestration and a mono-pitched roof.
Internally, the original plan form remains, along with some door cases and the staircase. A distinctive ogee pendant frieze is present on the landing fascia. The building demonstrates group value through its architectural style and historical context.
