Description
The coach house, stables, and attached wall and archway adjoining Hanbury Hall to the north-east date from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The structure is built of brick with ashlar dressings and features plain tiled hipped roofs. It is a large rectangular block, aligned north-west/south-east, consisting of three sections with a ratio of 3:1:3 bays. The central bay, which originally allowed coach access, projects slightly forward, but the large semi-circular headed archways on both elevations are now blocked.
The building is two storeys high and has a moulded eaves cornice on the north-east elevation. The entrance elevation on this side features chamfered end quoins, and the central blocked archway has ashlar jambs. The flanking bays contain blind semi-circular arched openings with keyblocks, while the central bay and three bays to the right have had garage doors inserted.
Adjoining the north-west end is a five-bay wing that includes three doors—two with transom lights, a double door, and a six-pane upper level window in its north-east elevation. The attached wall, approximately 10 feet high, connects to the house and features an archway with an angled head, similar to those found in the forecourt wall. The coach house and attached wall enclose the rear courtyard to the north-east of Hanbury Hall, near the Long Gallery.
