Description
The ice house, located about 250 yards north-west of Hanbury Hall, dates from the mid-18th century and is constructed of brick. It has a circular plan with a floor measuring approximately 12½ feet in diameter. The walls are cambered and rise to a diameter of about 16 feet at the springing of the domed roof, which reaches about 20 feet high at its apex. The entrance passage on the north-west side is vaulted, extending about 28 feet long and sloping down from the pit to a sump near the entrance door. There is also a hatchway on the opposite side for filling the ice house, which is now glazed. To the west of the ice house, there were a series of pools equipped with sluices for ice production. This ice house is noted as a particularly good example of its type.
