Description

The Church of St Michael is a Grade II* listed building that dates from the 13th and 15th centuries and was heavily restored in 1883 by F Preedy. It is constructed of blue lias stone and has plain tile roofs. The church features a west tower, a nave with a south porch, a north transept, and a chancel. The two-stage tower, built in the 15th century, has two-light bell openings and an embattled parapet, supported by diagonal buttresses.

The nave includes a small cusped 13th-century lancet window, a round-arched 12th-century south door, and two 15th-century hollow chamfered three-light windows on the south side. The timber south porch was rebuilt in 1883. The north transept has small 13th-century lancets on the east and west sides, along with paired cusped lancets on the north. An arch leading to the nave was added in 1883.

The chancel features a renewed three-light east window, a small 18th-century square window on the north side, and a late 13th-century two-light window on the south side. Adjacent to this is a Tudor-arched door with a hollow chamfered two-light Perpendicular window, which has carved head stops on the hoodmould. The roof and chancel arch were also completed in 1883. Inside, there is a defaced 12th-century pillar piscina, a Norman font that is circular with rosettes and band decoration, 16th-century bench ends, and 15th or 16th-century panels on the pulpit, along with some medieval tiles in the north transept. The east window features stained glass from 1903 by T F Curtis, Ward & Hughes, which is signed.
