Description
The retaining wall on the east side of the pond, located about 50 yards north-west of Hanbury Hall, dates from the early 18th century and was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick in English garden wall bond with sandstone coping. The wall is roughly a quadrant shape, measuring about 20 yards long, with a return at the west end and terminating at the north end in a square pier topped with a pyramidal cap. Originally, this wall was connected to one of a pair of pavilions that marked the boundary between the formal garden designed by George London and the pond and deer park beyond. The original layout is depicted in a perspective drawing from 1732 by Joseph Dougharty.
