Description

Nos 36 and 38 on Friar Street are late 16th century, two-storey houses constructed of timber frame and plaster. They feature three modern leaded plain transomed six-light casements on both levels. The entrance includes an early 18th century door with eight fielded panels, topped by a restored or modern hood supported by modillions. The timber framing includes some quadrant studding, and there are moulded wood eaves and old tiles on the roof. A side brick stack has stone angle dressings, while the upper part is made of enriched and panelled brickwork from the time of Queen Anne. The houses have gabled ends and gabled bays at the rear. Nos 36 to 44 (even) form a cohesive group.
