Description

The Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with 20th-century additions and alterations. It features a timber frame with later brick infill that is colour washed, topped with a reed thatched roof. The building is single-storey with an attic. Attached to the eastern gable end is a single-storey kitchen and bathroom addition that is rendered. The original cottage consists of two rooms on each floor, with hearths located at each gabled end.

On the exterior, the northern and southern flank walls display panels of small-framing with angle braces in the upper corners and on either side of the cross wall, which is positioned to the east of centre. The two-light casements on both fronts are 20th-century replacements that mimic the pattern of former 19th-century windows. There is a plank door located left of centre on the north front, while a doorway on the south side was blocked in the late 20th century. The two first-floor windows on the southern side are set in eyebrow dormers, and there are no windows on the first floor of the north side. The western gable end features a rubble stone stack with offsets and a brick chimney, while the stack at the eastern end is entirely made of 20th-century brick.

Inside, the timber framing is visible on the walls of both floors, supported by angled braces and jowled corner posts that hold the roof trusses, which include ties and angled struts. The ground floor rooms retain original joists and heavy axial spinal beams, although the floor has been replaced with a concrete raft. The staircase from the 20th century is made of pine. The upper floor maintains its original purlins and wind braces.
