Description
This is probably a house and shop, dating from around 1780, with later additions and alterations including a shop front from the mid-19th century. The building is now a shop with flats above. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern with imitation stone sills. The roof is concealed and the brick stack has an oversailing course topped with decorative pots. The building is three storeys high with two windows on the first floor. The first and second floors have 6/6 flush sash windows set within flat arches made of gauged brick. A low coped parapet tops the facade. The shop front has fluted pilasters on the outside and a shaped fascia with a moulded cornice; the large plate glass window sits on an apron with two raised and fielded panels and a cylindrical mullion. An off-centre right shop entrance is glazed. Further to the right is a six-panel door with the lower panels being flush beaded and a six-pane overlight. The interior has not been inspected. Historical records indicate that Broad Street was a commercially important area of the city, second only to High Street, and part of the direct route through the city from the bridge. Several houses in Broad Street are known to have 17th and earlier origins. The listed buildings in Broad Street form a significant group, including numbers 10, 10A, 11 with the Crown Inn, 12, 18, 19, 29, 32-36, 40, 41, 43-49, 51-63, 69, 70 and the Church of All Saints.
