Description
No. 19 Broad Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from around 1770 and has undergone later alterations, including a shop front added in the 1970s, though it may have earlier origins. The building is constructed of dark red brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar quoins, sills, and keystones, with a concealed roof and end brick stacks. It stands three storeys tall and has three first-floor windows. The quoins extend to full height, with those on the ground floor renewed. The building has a crowning frieze and a moulded cornice topped with a renewed coped parapet. The first and second floors have 6/6 sash windows set in plain reveals with sills, under flat arches made of gauged brick with keystones. The ground floor features a glazed shop front and a glazed entrance.
Inside, the building retains original joinery, including panelled shutters on the first-floor windows. The second-floor rear room has decorative plasterwork on the ceiling.
Historically, by the 16th century, Broad Street was second only to High Street in terms of commercial significance. It was a key route through the city from Worcester Bridge and housed the businesses of several important traders as well as at least two inns. Several houses on Broad Street are known to have origins from the 17th century and earlier, including Nos 32, 40, 41, and 57.
All the listed buildings on Broad Street form a significant group, including Nos 10, 10A, 11, the Crown Inn, 12, 18, 19, 29, 32-36 (consecutive), 40, 41, 43-49 (consecutive), 51-63 (consecutive), 69, 70, and the Church of All Saints.
