Description

This is probably a mid-to-late 18th century house and shop, now used as a shop with a flat above. It may have earlier origins, and has undergone later additions and alterations including what appear to be 19th-century balconettes and a 1970s shop front. The building is constructed of reddish-orange brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with flat arches of red-rubbed brick and stone sills. It has a concealed roof and cast-iron balconettes. The building is three storeys high with three windows on the first floor. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sash windows, and the second-floor windows are 3/6 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. Balconettes with scrolled details are positioned beneath the first-floor windows. A renewed, low coped parapet tops the building. The ground floor contains a glazed and tiled shop front with canted plate-glass windows and a glazed door. The ground floor interior has been altered, although the rest of the building was not inspected. Historical records indicate that Broad Street was a commercially important route through the city from the 16th century. Several buildings on Broad Street are believed to have 17th-century and earlier origins. The listed buildings along Broad Street, including numbers 10, 12, 18, 19, 29, 32-36, 40, 41, 43-49, 51-63, 69, 70, the Crown Inn and the Church of All Saints, form a significant group.
