Description
No. 52 Broad Street is likely a former house and shop that now serves as a building society. The facade dates from around 1820, although it probably has earlier origins and has undergone later additions and alterations, including changes to the ground-floor shop front in the 1980s. The building features stucco over brick with a concealed roof, standing three storeys tall with three first-floor windows. There are sill bands on the first and second floors, and the windows are 2/2 horned sashes set in near-flush frames with tooled architraves. The first-floor windows have friezes and pediments, and the building is topped with a low coped parapet. The ground floor has horizontal rustication, with entrances at the ends and off-centre left, featuring renewed six-panel doors, one of which is part-glazed. The windows between channeled horizontal pilaster strips have also been renewed. The interior has been altered on the ground floor, but the rest of the building was not inspected.
Historically, by the 16th century, Broad Street was the second most important commercial street after High Street. It was a key route through the city from the Worcester Bridge and housed various important traders and at least two inns. Several houses on Broad Street are known to have 17th-century and earlier origins.
The listed buildings on Broad Street create a significant group, including Nos. 10, 10A, 11 and the Crown Inn, 12, 18, 19, 29, 32-36 (consecutive), 40, 41, 43-49 (consecutive), 51-63 (consecutive), 69, 70, and the Church of All Saints.
