Description

This is probably a house and shop, now used as a shop. It likely dates from around 1750 to 1770, although it may have earlier origins, with later additions and alterations including a shop front installed in the 1970s. The building is three storeys high with four windows on the first floor. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring gauged brick flat arches. The windows have stone sills, keystones, quoins, and copings. Quoins run from the first floor to the full height of the building. The first and second floors contain 6/6 sash windows. The first-floor windows are taller than those on the second floor, and all are set in plain reveals with flat arches and sills. The central keystones have incised decoration, and those to the first floor have cornices. The front features a renewed glazed shop front and a central entrance. The roofline is finished with a low, coped parapet. The ground floor interior was altered at some point and the remainder of the interior has not been inspected. Broad Street was a significant commercial area from the 16th century, serving as a direct route through the city and containing business premises and inns. Other buildings in Broad Street are known to have 17th-century or earlier origins. Number 29 is one of a group of listed buildings in Broad Street, including numbers 10, 18, 19, 32-36, 40, 41, 43-49, 51-63, 69 and 70, and the Church of All Saints. It forms a further group with numbers 2-22 in Bridge Street and number 2 in Quay Street.
