Description
The Plough Inn is a house that has been converted into an inn, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations, including 20th-century attic dormers. It features a stuccoed and whitewashed brick exterior with a plain tile roof and two stacks at the right end. The building has two storeys with attics and four first-floor windows, along with an extension at the rear.
At the entrance on the left, there is a step leading to a six-panel door, where the upper four panels are raised and fielded, while the lower panels are flush and beaded. Above the door is a fanlight, and the entrance is framed with plain eaves. The ground floor includes two four-over-one horned sash windows, with etched glass in the lower lights. There are remnants of a first-floor band. The first floor has four nine-over-nine sash windows set in near-flush frames with chamfered sills, as well as an eaves band and a modillion cornice. The box attic dormers contain casement windows.
On the right side, there is another entrance in the gable end, featuring a three-long-panel door, and a multi-pane window above it on the first floor. The rear of the building has two eight-over-eight sash windows and one four-over-four sash window.
Inside, the dog-leg staircase is notable for its two rod-on-vase balusters per tread, along with a shaped and wreathed handrail and carved tread ends. The front room showcases raised and fielded panelling, with panelled cupboard doors that have H-hinges on either side of the fireplace; the cupboard on the left is larger. The room also features a shaped cornice.
The Plough Inn is situated at the corner of Fish Street and Deansway, framing a view of the Cathedral.
