Description

44 and 46 Lark Hill are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1819 to 1824, with some later additions and alterations. The villas are constructed of stucco over brick and feature a hipped slate roof, along with stuccoed party-wall stacks topped with pots. They rise three storeys and have four first-floor windows, with service ranges at the rear. The design is symmetrical and classical, with the main facade facing the garden to the west. Notable stucco details include full-height Doric pilasters at the ends and paired pilasters between the windows. The wide eaves add to the architectural interest.

The first floor has 8/8 sash windows with blind boxes, the second floor has 4/4 sashes, and the ground floor features tall 6/6 sashes where original, all set in plain reveals with sills. A timber verandah adorns the ground floor of the garden facade. Entrances are located at the sides and rear, featuring a three-panel part-glazed door with a fanlight that has radial glazing bars, along with a partially renewed timber doorcase.

Inside, No. 46 includes a dogleg staircase with a wreathed handrail, a marble fireplace, and panelled shutters on the windows. Historically, the Lark Hill development was intended to be more extensive, featuring terraces and a crescent. Nos. 38 to 50 (even) and Woodside on Lark Hill Road form a cohesive group of villas. Notably, No. 44 was previously listed as No. 4, and No. 46 was previously listed as No. 5 Larkhill Road.
