Description
Heron Lodge is a villa dating from approximately 1823 to 1828, originally constructed for Captain Powell. Later additions and alterations occurred around 1900, including a range at the rear. The building is constructed of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and three tall stuccoed end stacks topped with cornices and pots. A timber and cast-iron verandah with a lead and glazed roof extends across the front facade.
The villa is two storeys high with five first-floor windows arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. Stucco detailing includes a plinth, full-height Doric pilasters to the ends and flanking the central window, and wide eaves. The windows are 1/1 horned sashes in plain reveals; those on the ground floor have sills and those on the first floor have louvered shutters. The central entrance has three steps leading to a part-glazed door, with the lower two panels being flush and reeded, and a fanlight featuring a batwing and circle glazing pattern. The doorcase is constructed of tooled timber with fluted pilasters and an open dentil pediment. A verandah runs along the front facade and the right return, supported by fluted columns and featuring a gothick frieze. The right return also showcases two full-height canted bays with 1/1 sashes and casement windows.
The interior retains original joinery and plasterwork, along with additions from around 1900. An open-well staircase has carved balusters and newel posts. Windows have panelled shutters, and there are some six-panel doors accompanied by fluted architraves with cornices and fleurons to the angles. A patterned tile floor is present in the hall. The ground floor features cornices with acanthus moulding and further decorative elements on the ceiling.
Originally accessed from Lark Hill Road, Heron Lodge is now accessed from London Road and was built as part of a group of Georgian villas along Lark Hill Road.
