Description

9 and 11 Copenhagen Street are two houses that now serve as a shop and offices. They were built around 1800, likely with earlier origins, and have undergone later additions and alterations, including a shop front from the 1970s. The buildings are constructed of reddish-orange brick in Flemish bond, with an ashlar ground floor, frieze, and cornice. They stand three storeys tall and feature four first-floor windows on one side and three on the other. The first and second floors have 2/2 horned sash windows set in plain reveals with sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. At the top, there is a frieze and a moulded cornice, along with a low coped parapet.

The ground floor retains horizontal rustication at the ends of the circa 1850 shop front on the left and to the right, topped by a continuous frieze and cornice. On the left, there is a glazed shop window, while on the right, there is a plinth with a left entrance featuring 6-panel double doors that have a cambered overlight in a tooled surround with a keystone, flanked by pilasters. There are also two cambered-arched, horned sash windows that are 1/1, with eared architraves and sills on feet, set in taller plain reveals. The left return of the building shows exposed timbering on the gable end and raised letters spelling 'ARD'.

Inside, the property features a fine cantilevered staircase with slender square balusters, illuminated by an elliptical skylight with radial glazing bars. Some rooms have moulded decorative plaster cornices, and one marble fire surround remains. Nos 7 to 11 (odd) form a group. Note that No. 9 was listed on March 8, 1974.
