Description
2 and 3 St Swithin's Street are two terraced houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the mid-18th century and have undergone various additions and alterations over the years, including a late 19th-century shop front on the right and a late 20th-century shop front on the left. The buildings are constructed of reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond, with the first floor painted, and feature stuccoed sills. They have a plain tile roof with a party-wall stack and rise to four storeys, with four windows on the first floor.
On the first floor, there are two 2/2 sash windows and two 1/1 horned sash windows. The second floor has 6/6 sash windows, while the third floor features 3/3 sash windows. All windows are flush and have flat arches made of gauged brick with sills. The ground floor on the left has a plate-glass shop front with a central glazed door and fluted end pilasters, along with a continuous fascia. On the right, there is a glazed brick plinth with basket- and round-arched windows that have foliate decorations in the spandrels, leading to a canted part-glazed door with lower raised-and-fielded panels and an overlight. The building is topped with a tall coped parapet.
The interiors were not inspected. Historically, St Swithin's Street was originally known as Goose Lane. Numbers 2, 3, 6, and 7 St Swithin's Street are part of a group that includes the Church of St Swithun on Church Street.
