Description
Numbers 6 and 7 on St Swithin's Street are a pair of houses that have been converted into shops with offices above. They date from around the 1750s and have undergone later additions and alterations, including late 19th-century windows and late 20th-century shop fronts. The buildings are constructed of pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond, featuring stucco sills and a plain tile roof with brick stacks along the party wall.
The structure stands three storeys tall with attics on the right side, displaying three windows on each of the first and second floors. The first and second floors have 1/1 sash windows and some 20th-century replacement windows, all of which are flush and have cambered heads with sills. The ground floor features a shop front on the left with plate-glass windows and turned mullions at the corners, leading to a central 20th-century glazed door with an overlight. This section includes end pilaster strips, a fascia, and a cornice. On the right, there is a replacement shop front designed in a Victorian style. The left gable end has a 1/1 sash window with a flat arch.
Inside, the first floor retains boxed beams, but the rest of the interior has not been inspected.
Historically, St Swithin's Street was originally known as Goose Lane. Numbers 2, 3, 6, and 7 on St Swithin's Street are part of a group that includes the Church of St Swithun on Church Street.
