Description

12 and 12A College Green is a house that has been converted into a school. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with earlier origins and later additions and alterations made around 1844-1845 for Canon Ryle Wood by architect Harvey Eginton and builder Mr. Fortey, at a cost of £750. The building is located on the site of a monastic shrine keeper or tumbary.

Constructed of brick, it is painted with timber-framing on the gable end and has a plain tile roof. The mid-19th century features include brick diagonal stacks, an axial stack, a left end stack, and two additional stacks on the rear range. The plan consists of three units with a through-passage to the left of the axial stack, which heats the central hall chamber.

The exterior is two storeys high, partly on a basement, and has two first-floor windows facing west (rear) and south. The entrance is off-centre to the left, featuring a four-panel door within a plain architrave and a Doric porch. The first floor has 8/8 sash windows, while the ground floor has 2/2 sashes. There is a cambered-arched opening, now blocked, between the windows on each floor. The right return has a first-floor 6/6 sash window, a square panel of timber-framing in the gable, and a 9-pane fixed light window in a flush frame. The left (south) return mainly features 4- and 6-light mullion and transom windows, and the rear range has 8/8 sashes.

Inside, there is clear evidence of the former timber-frame construction in the mostly concealed front range. The interior also includes early 19th-century panelled doors, cornicing, and joinery, as well as a mid-19th-century open-well staircase with Gothic Revival details at the rear.

All the listed buildings in College Green are part of a significant group that contributes to the setting of Worcester Cathedral, located to the north.
