Description
These boundary walls form part of the western boundary of the former Monastery of St Mary, extending south from the Water Gate. Some sections also define the boundaries of 10 College Green and continue as the southern boundary of the monastery walls. The walls likely have origins dating back to the 14th century, but were significantly altered and added to in the 18th century. They are constructed of sandstone in red, cream, and grey/green hues, with areas of red brick. The overall length of the main wall is approximately 64 metres, running from the Water Gate southwards to the southern boundary of 10 College Green. The typical height is around 3 metres, decreasing to approximately 2 metres at the southern end. The walls are built with regularly coursed, smooth-faced rectangular blocks, approximately 0.25 metres by 0.5 metres. They feature chamfered coping stones, with additional chamfering at the wall top to the south, and an oversailing detail at the northern end. A plinth approximately half the wall's height runs along its base, with chamfered tops. The northern section, which is overbuilt by a 18th-century brick and tile agricultural range, features four full-height buttresses that match the wall profile. Walls associated with 10 College Green extend approximately 20 metres to the south and 25 metres to the north. The southern wall is typically 2 to 2.5 metres high and primarily stone with regular coursed masonry, with a double-chamfered coping detail. The northern boundary wall is largely rebuilt in brick during the 19th century, but incorporates remnants of an earlier stone wall. Excavations near the Water Gate suggest that the wall to the south of the gate was built before the towpath was constructed, likely in the early 19th century, placing the wall’s construction no later than the late 18th century. Further sections of the former Monastic Precinct Wall, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, are visible to the east and south of College Green, running north from Edgar Tower and along the northwest side of Castle Place.
