Description
Hostel House is a house built in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. A new wing was added to the rear right in 1906 by A. Hill Parker, replacing a coach house and granary. The building features painted brick with stone sills, a plain clay tile roof, dentilled eaves, and parapeted end-gables. There are three brick stacks on the rear roof slope, all with oversailing detail and pots. A timber door canopy is also present.
The house is double-fronted and double-depth, standing two storeys with attics. It has a two-window range to the left that projects forward under a hipped roof, and a full-height canted bay to the right, also under a hipped roof. The first floor has seven windows arranged in a 2:2:3 pattern, all of which are 6/6 sashes. The windows in the bay are in plain reveals, while the others are near-flush, all featuring sills and flat gauged brick arches with capped keystones. The two central first-floor windows have thick glazing bars. To the right of the entrance, there is a stone step leading to a six-panel door that is raised and fielded, with a three-pane overlight and a corniced canopy supported by shaped brackets. The roof features three cambered dormers with paired side-hung casements of 6, 8, and 3 panes.
Inside, there is early 19th-century joinery, including panelled doors in moulded timber architraves and marble fireplaces. The staircase, added in 1906, has tapered newels and stick balusters.
Hostel House is part of a significant group of listed buildings on College Green, which contribute to the setting of Worcester Cathedral to the north. The rear boundary wall of Nos. 2-6 College Green is part of the Monastic Precinct Wall, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
