Description

Boundary walls to west and south of Nos. 13 and 14 College Green, Worcester, including railings and a monastic precinct wall abutting No. 12A.

These boundary walls enclose the gardens of Nos. 13 and 14 College Green. They extend westwards as railings, gates, and wall sections to meet the Monastery Wall adjacent to the river, and continue eastwards as wall with railings above towards the Green. The structure possibly reuses quarried materials from the 14th-century monastery, but contains substantial later additions and alterations dating mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. Materials include red, cream, and grey-green sandstone, red brick, wrought iron, and cast iron.

The main boundary wall measures approximately 77 metres in overall length (45 metres north-south, 32 metres east-west), with heights varying between 2.5 and 4.5 metres. The entire western section comprises brick laid over regularly coursed masonry of rectangular, smooth-faced blocks, typically arranged in two to eight courses between 0.6 and 1.5 metres high. A thin oversailing stone coping with cambered top surface runs along the length. Changes in wall height are managed by curved ramps with profiled copings. The northern end terminates in the remains of the Monastery Dormitory. The southern boundary wall uses similar brick-over-stone construction, pierced by a pedestrian opening with a cambered arch and vertically boarded door at its left-centre. To the right of the door, the wall is predominantly brick with approximately 1 metre of visible stonework at ground level.

Railings and wall extending from the south-west corner to the riverside wall on Kleve Walk continue for approximately 20 metres, with a 19th-century brick return of about 10 metres towards No. 12B. These railings stand approximately 1.4 metres high, featuring rectangular-section top, middle, and bottom rails with main posts and circular cross-section vertical railings that alternate between full and half-height, topped with arrowhead finials (some dog-bar finials are broken). Matching gates stand to left and right. Cast-iron hinge and latch posts, octagonal in section with moulded cap and plinth, bear the casting mark "J & F Hall of Worcester." West of the railings, approximately 20 metres of wall mostly 2.5 metres high comprises brick with approximately two courses of stone at the foot and brick-on-edge coping. The final 6 metres consists entirely of stone construction matching the main boundary wall detail, standing 1 metre high with half-round blue brick coping.

A further wall with railings set above continues eastwards from the boundary wall for approximately 14 metres, varying in height from 1.2 to 2.8 metres. It features regularly coursed stone as per the main boundary wall with cambered-top coping, terminating at its east end in a matching stone pillar. This pillar is square in section with stopped chamfers to arrisses on a chamfered-top plinth and a moulded cap. The railings above measure approximately 1.4 metres high, with a moulded top rail, circular-section vertical railings, and ornate arrowhead finials.

Historical documentation shows that Robert Willis's map of 1863 annotates the boundary wall to Nos. 13 and 14 as a "modern wall." The railings to the west of the boundary wall do not appear on Willis's map or on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1886.
