Description
No. 24 Sansome Walk is a gate lodge to the Arboretum Gardens, built around 1859 with later alterations. The building features red and yellow polychrome brickwork arranged in bands, with ashlar keystones, sills, and architraves on the main facade windows. The roof is slate on the left side and plain tiles on the right.
The structure is one storey with attics and has an irregular plan. The facade facing Sansome Walk includes two curvilinear gables; the right gable projects forward and features a brick canted bay on the ground floor, which has timber mullion and transom windows arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. Above, there is a triple 'mullion' window in a cambered-arched surround with quoins. To the left, there is a 2-light window on each floor with 1/1 sashes, also in similar cambered-arched surrounds with quoins. The entrance is located to the right and consists of a panelled door set in an arched surround with a keystone and imposts, with the arch forming part of an arcade that wraps around the corner.
On the right side, facing Arboretum Road, there is another curvilinear gable featuring a 2-light casement window, with 4-centred lights above it. A band runs between the storeys. The ground floor displays two round-headed arches supported by square piers, with stone archivaults and keystones; these arches are now glazed. There are additional casement and 2/2 sash windows on the ground floor, and brick copings adorn the gables. The interior has not been inspected.
