Description
The Moat House is a 16th-century house featuring a timber-framed structure with painted brick on a rubble stone plinth, topped with plain tile roofs. It is two stories tall and has a T-shaped plan. The west side includes a cross range with gables on the north and south, each of which has an upper floor that jetties out. The ground floor is close studded, while the gables display decorative diagonal timbering. Each gable features a ground floor timber oriel window with four lights, along with a four-light mullion and transom window on the first floor and a two-light attic window. The west front has a large window, and there is a 16th-century timber porch with crude 17th-century wooden Ionic half columns attached, leading to a heavy plank door. The ground floor has a four-light window, with various upper windows present. The east gable end shows tension bracing, and there is a timber-framed outshut on the south side with one dormer above. A large stack is positioned at the angle of the cross range, and all windows are fitted with leaded lights. The moat surrounding the house is still visible.
