Description
The Elms Hotel is a county house that has been converted into a hotel. According to hotel history, it was built in 1710 by Thomas White of Worcester, although this claim is not confirmed. The center of the building was extensively remodeled after a fire, and wings were added in 1927. The exterior is rendered with freestone dressings, featuring a brick plinth and quoins. It has a flat roof that is concealed behind a balustraded parapet and a moulded eaves cornice that is bracketed in the center.
The building has a U-plan layout, with a three-storey central block that has two bays on each side of a wider central bay. This central bay is advanced and topped with a bracketed pediment that has a brick tympanum and a freestone crest. The windows are glazing bar sash types set in lugged architraves, featuring an entablature, cornice, and cills supported by brackets. The central bay also includes a Venetian window with a decorative fanlight, and there is a plain band between each floor. The main entrance features a 20th-century central glazed door beneath a decorative fanlight, flanked by narrow sidelights, all set under an open pediment with a cornice on brackets.
On either side of the central block, there are two-storey wings that project outward. These wings have three bays and feature windows similar to those in the center, but without the entablature. The first-floor windows are round-headed with keystones, and there is a wide glazing bar sash window with a round-headed center in the middle of each front elevation.
