Description
Clifton Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th to 17th century, with later alterations. It features a timber-frame and red brick construction, along with a 19th-century red brick addition to the south. The original house has a T-plan layout and a plain tile gable-ended roof, with a smaller gable at the angle between the north end cross-wing and the main range. There are massive brick chimney stacks located at the angle of the subsidiary gable and the main range, which are connected at their heads. The building is two storeys high, with the north cross-wing refaced in brick at the east end during the 19th century. The north side displays exposed square framing and includes one dormer. The main range has a projecting gable that is weatherboarded, featuring iron triple casements on each floor, and a four-light casement on the ground floor adjacent to it. The west side is rendered and includes one gabled half-dormer with a pair of casements on the first floor and a triple casement below, all with iron frames. The 19th-century south extension is two storeys tall and has a two-window range with a slate roof, constructed of red brick with timber-framing in the north gable and cambered head openings. Inside, there is a 17th-century winding stair with a carved cap to the newel, along with wind-bracing and queen post tie beams and collar trusses in the cross-wing.
