Description

The Malvern War Memorial is located in the garden or forecourt of Malvern Library. It features a bronze sculpture of a winged young boy, symbolizing the Spirit of Youth, who stands with his arms raised, holding a flaming torch. At the boy's feet lies a crown of thorns. The sculpture is mounted on a tapering rectangular stone pedestal, which is inscribed with the words, 'TO THOSE WHO / NOBLY SERVED / 1914 - 1919'. This pedestal rests on a square stone plinth, and below it is a two-stepped square stone base that sits on an additional three-stepped square stone base, added around 2008.

Inside the library, there is a roll of honour that lists the names of 360 men from Malvern who died in the First World War. It is inscribed with the text, 'THESE ARE THE / NAMES OF THE / MEN OF MALVERN / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 -1918 / TO COMMEMORATE THEIR SACRIFICE THE PEOPLE OF MALVERN / ERECTED IN 1923 IN THE GARDEN OF THIS LIBRARY, THE BRONZE / FIGURE BY RICHARD GOULDEN, WHICH REPRESENTS THE SPIRIT / OF YOUTH VICTORIOUS OVER DIFFICULTIES, HOLDING ALOFT THE / LIGHT HE HAS SAVED FROM EXTINCTION / (NAMES)'. After the Second World War, a further roll of honour was installed for the 157 men and women who died during that conflict, inscribed with, 'THESE ARE THE NAMES OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF MALVERN / WHO FELL IN THE / SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES) / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'.
