Description

This tomb chest, located approximately 7 metres south of the southeast buttress of the tower of the Church of St John, dates from the early 18th century. It is made of sandstone with limestone ends. The chest features a flat moulded top and scrolled ends, with the eastern end carved with a shield of arms within a cartouche. On the north side, there is an inscription surrounded by carved foliage decoration that reads: "In memory of Captain Richard Dyer Gun-maker Citizen and Free-man of London. He departed this life August the 20th 1722 Aged 71 Ys."
