Description
The lychgate and adjoining east section of the churchyard wall at the Church of St Martin date from the mid-19th century. The lychgate is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and features a tiled roof with gable end parapets. It has a square stone base of a former cross set in the middle of the ridge. The lychgate includes round-headed archways at the gable ends, flanked by buttresses with offsets and nookshafts that have varied scalloped capitals and moulded bases. The walls between the archways are approximately 3 feet high and have moulded copings. The churchyard wall adjoins the center of the lychgate walls at right angles and is made of brick in Flemish garden wall bond, topped with moulded stone copings and also about 3 feet high.
