Description

48, 50, and 52 Birmingham Road is a row of houses built in two phases, dating from around 1820 to 1830 on the left side and shortly after on the right side. The left section features a chequer pattern of red and buff brick, while the right side is constructed of red brick. The houses have boarded eaves and slate roofs with a shallow pitch, supported by brick stacks located on the ridge at the right end, to the left of the right-hand house, and at the right end of the left-hand house pair.

The buildings are two storeys tall and exhibit slightly irregular window arrangements, with five windows on the first floor of the left-hand house and four on the ground floor, while the right-hand house has four windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor. All windows are glazing bar sashes. The left-hand house features four ground floor windows with decorated lintels and cornice hoods supported by volute brackets, while the right-hand house has plastered lintels with cornice hoods. Notably, the second window from the left on the ground floor of the left-hand block is narrower than the others, and the fourth window from the left is tripartite.

The doorway of the left-hand block has a panelled door with a transom light and an entablature hood on pilasters, positioned to the right of the third window from the left. The right-hand block has a panelled door set in a round arched surround with a wide transom light and a moulded plastered surround to the left of the right-hand window. Additionally, there is a blind carriage arch on the left side of the left-hand block, which may never have been open. This arch features a painted segmental arch and impost blocks surrounding a round-arched entrance with a boarded door, providing access to the yard behind.
