Description
The Schoolhouse is an early 18th-century building, likely constructed in 1704, originally used as a school and adjoining schoolhouse, and subsequently altered and extended around 1840. It is now a house. The building is constructed of brick, with some areas rendered and painted under a stucco finish, and has plain tiled roofs with fishscale tiled boarding, some pierced scalloped bargeboards, decorative ridge tiles, and ridge stacks. The plan is in a "T" shape, with the original two-bay schoolhouse aligned east/west and a four-bay schoolroom projecting from the west gable.
The building is single-storey with an attic, featuring dormers. The former schoolhouse has a three-course band separating the levels and a two-course band at eaves level on its side elevation. The schoolroom has a two-course band at eaves level on its side elevation, which also forms an impost band at the north gable end.
The north elevation of the schoolhouse features two 19th-century canted bay windows with hipped roofs, replacing the original two-course band. There are two gabled dormers with pierced scalloped bargeboards and two-light casements. A central 19th-century gabled porch, also with decorative bargeboards, contains a ledged and battened door and rectangular windows in its sides. The schoolroom projects to the right and has two blocked rectangular windows with dripmoulds in its gable, along with two similar square windows and a central doorway in the angle with the schoolhouse.
The interior of the schoolhouse has a timber-framed central wall with rendered infill. The two southernmost bays of the schoolroom are from the mid-19th century, and there are also 19th-century additions to the west elevation.
