Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church primarily built in the 14th century and restored in 1861 by Henry Day. It features ashlar stonework and a tiled roof, comprising a chancel and nave with a bellcote. The chancel has two bays, with a two trefoiled-light window under a 2-centred head on the left and a trefoiled lancet. The priest's door has a 2-centred head and label, while the east window, dating from the 19th century, consists of three trefoiled lights. The chancel's three bays include a window on the right with three cinquefoiled lights and another on the left with two cinquefoiled lights, both under square heads with labels. The south door features a 14th-century timber-framed porch with a moulded cornice and curved wind-braces, with arch-braces supporting a cambered tie-beam that forms a 2-centred arch at the entrance. The bellcote at the west end is from the 16th century and has two trefoil-headed openings topped with a crocketed pinnacle.

Inside, the chancel arch has a 2-centred shape with two chamfered orders and engaged respond shafts. There is a trefoil-headed piscina in the south wall of the chancel. The nave has three bays with tie-beam trusses and arch-braced collars, while the chancel has two bays with an arch-braced collar and V-struts at the apex. Notable interior features include an incised early 16th-century alabaster floor tablet in the chancel dedicated to William Leycester and four wall tablets at the west end of the nave dating from 1651 to 1758.
