Description

Lock number 40 on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal was built around 1805, with some repairs made in the late 19th century and mid-20th century. It features a rectangular chamber with stone copings, although some of these have been repaired with brick. There is a single gate at the upper end and a pair of gates at the lower end. The mouth of the lock is constructed from blue brick with brick copings and includes steps on the north side. The lock's number is incised in a stone block set into the mouth wall. Additionally, there are 19th-century brick treads for opening the upper gate. This lock is part of the Tardebigge Flight, which is the longest flight of locks in England.
