Description
King's House is part of a former convent, now used as an office. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with a reconstruction at the rear from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high and features a seven-window range, topped with a frieze and cornice. The windows have rubbed brick flat arches over 12-pane sash windows, with blind windows in the second bay. The ground floor includes two horned sashes and three sashes with moulded frames, while the first floor has a stained-glass window in the first bay and a narrow window with a stone lintel in the sixth bay, above a round-headed entrance that has an archivolt, keystone, and fanlight. A large 20th-century chimney stack is present. The mid-19th century rear elevation features a stone sill band on the first floor and a top brick Lombard frieze, with pointed windows that have stone reveals; the ground floor windows are trefoil-headed with hood moulds. The entrance is located in the first bay. King's House is part of a former convent complex that included Calvary Chapel, Regents Court, St John's Cloisters, and Hanover House on George Street.
