Description

The College of Adult Education is a teacher training college, built in 1899 by T.H. Fleeming and Son. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof and features some ashlar dressings. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical nine-window facade, including three windows in a cross-wing at each end and a two-window caretaker's house set back to the right. The gables are coped with kneelers.

The windows have simply-moulded frames and moulded brick sills, with 12-pane sashes that have small-paned upper glazing. The ground floor features round-headed windows with paired sashes, while the first floor has elliptical-headed windows in the cross-wings. A central flat-roofed dormer, adorned with a small pediment, has a small-paned casement and is flanked by two slightly tapering stacks. The caretaker's house has a hipped roof and includes a two-storey bow window with a cornice to the right of a segmental-headed entrance, which is framed by an ashlar architrave, overlight, sidelights, and a flat canopy. Above this entrance is an elliptical-headed window with a tympanum and sash; there is also a flat-roofed half-dormer with a small semi-circular pediment and small-paned casement. The left return features a similar entrance. The rear of the building has a large hall wing to the left. This structure is a good, well-proportioned example of its type.
