Description
The Grange is a farmhouse, now a house, that likely dates from the 17th century but was altered and extended in the late 18th to early 19th centuries, with further changes made in the late 19th century. The building has a timber-framed core, which is mostly covered in red brick on the outside, and features plain tiled roofs. It has tall projecting red brick end stacks with oversailing cornices. The house is three storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front. The central windows are narrower, and there are canted bay windows on the ground floor, which are probably late 19th-century additions. The first floor has windows with rusticated wedge lintels and fluted keys above the casements, while the second floor has smaller windows with shallow casements. The entrance features a mid-19th-century doorcase with open strapwork ornament and paired glazed doors. At the rear, there are gabled wings and some casemented windows with leaded glazing.
Inside, there is significant evidence of the timber-framed core, including studding, wall posts, and beams. There is a late 18th-century fireplace that may have been brought into one of the ground floor rooms, along with a late 19th-century range with cupboards in the kitchen extension. The interior also includes several 18th-century panelled and boarded doors, and an early 18th-century staircase with a closed string, moulded handrail, slightly bulbous turned balusters with square knops, and a columnar foot newel.
