Description

West Bromwich Manor House is a manor house dating from around 1300, with additions and alterations from the 15th and 16th centuries. It underwent extensive restoration around 1960, during which 18th and 19th-century alterations were removed, revealing and repairing the timber frame. The building features a tile roof and is arranged around a courtyard, which is surrounded by a moat.

The west wall of the hall was rebuilt in the late 16th century and includes a 14-light bay window with a gabled chamber above. Inside, there is a spere truss with solid screens between the posts and side walls. The central base-cruck truss has double tie-beams that clasp the roof plates, along with an upper crown-post roof. Early 15th-century cross-wings were added, replacing earlier extensions to the hall. Each cross-wing has a small annexe to the west and consists of two bays, featuring a central tie-beam truss and an intermediate arch-braced collar-beam truss. Two ogee-headed service doorways lead into the south wing.

A chapel block was added to the east end of the north cross-wing around 1500, which includes a full-height chapel to the east and a two-storey western half. The kitchen block, located at the south-west corner of the south cross-wing, dates from the late 16th century with alterations from the 17th century. The gatehouse, likely from the late 16th century, closes off the east side of the courtyard. It features a jettied design with close-studding and lozenge panels on the upper part of the first floor, and a large brick chimney stack protrudes from its south gable wall. The building is discussed and illustrated in detail in the publication by S.R. Jones titled "West Bromwich (Staffs) Manor House," found in the South Staffordshire Archaeological and Historical Society Transactions, Volume XVII, 1975-76.
