Description
The District Public Library in Wednesbury is a public library built in 1907 by the architectural firm Crouch, Butler and Savage. It is constructed of red brick and limestone, topped with a slate roof, and spans two storeys. The south facade, which faces Walsall Road, features four bays and is flanked by broad stone pilaster strips that have round-headed niches on the upper storey, along with a modillion cornice. The lower windows have segmental heads, each adorned with a carved stone wreath above. The upper windows are designed as two lights, with recessed Tuscan columns serving as mullions. A domed stone cupola sits on the ridge of the roof.
The right-hand return wall is divided into three sections by pilaster strips. On the left side, there are three ground floor windows similar to those on the south facade, while the first floor features a Venetian window. The right side mirrors the ground floor design, with a 5-light window on the first floor, also using Tuscan columns as mullions. The central section consists of three bays, with 3-light windows on the first floor. In the central bay, there is a door surround that includes a 3-light mullioned window, a pediment, Doric quarter-columns, the arms of the Borough, and inscriptions that read "AC" (for Andrew Carnegie), "HJ", and "Public Library".
