SANDWELL MB WALSALL STREET/HOLLIES DRIVE SO 9895 SE Wednesbury 11/162 District Public Library Wednesbury GV II

Public library. 1907 by Crouch, Butler and Savage (foundation stone). Red brick and limestone with slate roof. Two storeys. South facade, facing Walsall Road, of four bays, flanked by broad stone pilaster strips with round-headed niches to the upper storey, and with modillion cornice. The lower windows have segmental heads. Above each is a carved stone wreath. The upper windows are of two lights with recessed Tuscan columns as mullions. Domed stone cupola on ridge of roof. The right hand return wall is in three sections separated by pilaster strips. At the left are three windows on the ground floor similar to those of the south facade. On the first floor is a Venetian window. At the right the ground floor is similar. On the first floor is a 5-light window with Tuscan columns as mullions. The central section is of three bays and has 3-light windows on the first floor. In the central bay is a door surround which incorporates a 3-light mullioned window, pediment, Doric quarter-columns, the arms of the Borough, and inscriptions: "AC" (Andrew Carnegie), "HJ", and "Public Library".
