Description
Old Portway Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1600, with cladding added in the 19th century. It is timber-framed, although most of the outer walls have been replaced with brick and stone. The roof is tiled, and the building has one storey with an attic. The facade features a wide 20th-century casement window on each side of the door, along with a smaller window to the right. There are chimneys located on the left-hand gable, to the right of the second window, and on the front wall, to the right of the right-hand window. Some timber-framing is visible on the left-hand gable wall, showcasing square panels beneath the tie-beam and raking struts to the collar.
Inside, the farmhouse consists of four bays with exposed ceiling joists. The left-hand bay has a roughly chamfered spine beam. The ceiling in the second bay is divided into four sections by deeply chamfered main beams, with the common joists running in alternating directions. The third bay features a stone inglenook, which was re-faced in the mid-20th century. The framing on the first floor indicates that it replaces an earlier firehood. On the first floor, three tie-beam trusses can be seen, complete with jowled posts, raking struts, and collars.
