Description

William Shenstone's Tomb, located 12 metres south west of the Church of St John the Baptist, is a chest tomb dating from around 1763. It is a simple rectangular stone tomb with a flat, undecorated top. On the western side, there is a stone slab with a chamfered top that bears the inscription "WILs SHENSTONE ..... 1763 ......", although part of the inscription has been worn away. William Shenstone was a poet and landscape theorist who had a significant influence during his lifetime, notably transforming his garden at Leasowes into one of the first natural landscape gardens in England.
