Description

A former ribbon factory and office dating to the mid-19th century, with later 19th and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick; the office section uses a Flemish bond pattern, while the factory portion features stretchers with some header courses, and has an engineering brick plinth and cills. The office has a slate roof with a hipped end, and the factory has gable-ended concrete tile roofs. Brick axial stacks are present.

The building consists of a long, rectangular range facing a small courtyard. The factory is located to the right (north-east) and the office or manager’s house to the left (south-west), appearing to be separate structures based on the joint in the brickwork.

The factory is three storeys high, with a basement at the rear facing New Buildings. It has a five-window range, featuring large five-light segmental-headed casements, mostly with glazing bars. The basement storey has wide segmental arch doorways, two of which have 20th-century shop fronts.

The office or manager's house is two storeys high with a four-window range, and contains sashes with glazing bars set within flat rubbed brick arches. The glazing bars are missing from the front facing the yard. A stuccoed doorway is situated to the left of centre, featuring a cornice on console brackets and a flush-panel door. The right-hand doorway and ground floor window on the south-east front have been altered. Bracketed eaves are present, along with two round-headed dormers on each side.

The ground storey of the house/office has had partitions and the staircase removed. The interior of the factory was not inspected. The building was originally used for ribbon manufacture, and later in the 19th century it served as drill rooms and an armoury for the Coventry Rifle Volunteers.
