Description

The former barn range, located approximately 50 metres west of New Shipton Farmhouse, is a building likely dating from the 15th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a cruck frame constructed of red brick and some timber framing, topped with a plain-tile roof. The barn consists of eight bays in total, with the four bays on the left likely from the 15th century. The far left has a door and a two-light window set in 19th or 20th-century walling, followed by a double door opening, then seven panels of square framing with brick underbuilding and a four-light window. There is another double doorway, and to the right, there are later additions with brick walling, stable doors, and various windows, including iron-framed ones at the far right. A 20th-century double doorway is located at the right end. The rear of the barn features various doorways and a blocked double doorway, along with a fragment of timber framing opposite the far left of the front.

Inside, the left half of the barn contains five pairs of full cruck blades, with one on the far left end cut off above the collar. The remaining blades are complete with collars and saddles, featuring single purlins between and most of the curved windbraces intact. To the right, there is a later queen-post truss, and at the right end, two queen-strut trusses likely from the late 18th century. The rafters and plank ridge have been renewed. Additionally, there is a mid-19th-century extension at the far left end that is not of special architectural interest.

This barn, with its five pairs of cruck blades, represents a rare and important survival of its type.
