Description

New Hall is a substantial medieval house, initially dating from the 13th or 14th century, with significant additions and alterations spanning several centuries. The original L-shaped house was extended in the late 16th century with a matching L-shaped wing, featuring a single-storey bay window bearing the date 1590 and the initials HS, believed to represent Henry Sacheverell. An early 17th-century addition to the rear was later heightened to create a tower in the Early English style, embellished with battlements and bearing the date 1796 and the initials IC, likely indicating John Chadwick. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and ashlar, with gabled tiled roofs, partly castellated. Windows are predominantly lattice casements, with some featuring pointed arched lights, mullions, and transoms. The house is arranged over two main storeys with attics. It is notably surrounded by a moat. A significant restoration, Gothicisation, and enlargement occurred in 1869, as indicated by a date on the gable to the right of the entrance. The interior includes the original medieval hall, a late 16th-century banqueting hall with panelled walls and an ornate ceiling, and an early newel staircase featuring carved heraldic beasts. New Hall was the residence of the Sacheverell family in the 17th century. The property comprises New Hall, "The Chapel," a former coach house and stables, a gardener's cottage, and gate piers, which form a cohesive group.
