Description
Nos 60 to 64 on Great Hampton Street is a large works and office block located at the corner with Well Street, built around 1912. It features red brick construction with buff terracotta and yellow and white tile decorations, reflecting the Birmingham Arts and Crafts style. The building has a grand design with a well-balanced composition.
Monumental arcading is present on both elevations; on Well Street, it rises from the ground floor and basement, screened by railings, up to the attic storey. On Great Hampton Street and the splayed corner, the arcading begins at the first floor. The attic storey has closely set narrow windows and a deep parapet. The bays are arranged in groups of two or four, separated by shallow breaks framed by banded piers that extend through the parapet. The broader bays feature semi-circular arched entrances on the ground floor and semi-circular arched windows at the attic level. There is also chequered tilework on the aprons and in the parapets, which have swept-up copings. The incline of Well Street enhances the monumental appearance of the arcading.
