Description

Stirchley Library is a library built in 1905 by John P. Osborne. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings and features a slate roof with stone-coped gable ends. The building has an integral brick end stack with a cornice. The plan includes a central entrance vestibule with an imperial staircase above the porch, providing access to the libraries.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with three bays on each side. The gables on the left and right are slightly advanced and feature canted stone two-storey bays with pilastered mullions, moulded transoms, and cills. The narrow flanking bays project forward with similarly pilastered windows. The centre is recessed, showcasing a stone doorway flanked by pilasters and a coved round arch with a large keystone. Above the doorway is a large stone frieze inscribed with "FREE LIBRARY" in bold letters, topped by a glazed six-bay colonnade with a modillion cornice, all in stone. The windows are leaded pane, and there are panelled and glazed double doors.

Inside, the entrance vestibule has a glazed and panelled screen with double doors featuring Art Nouveau stained glass. The imperial staircase above the entrance has square newels topped with ball finials and alternating plain and splat balusters, along with a panelled ceiling. There is a glazed screen leading to the library entrance, which has pilastered mullions and moulded transoms arched over the doorways. The libraries are well-lit from above, with wall pilasters and cornices, while the office includes a pilastered wooden chimneypiece with cornices.
